Erika's Eck

24-hour snack-bar legend since 1948 — slaughterhouse schnitzel at four in the morning.

Erika's Eck has been a Hamburg institution since 1948, sitting on the edge of the former slaughterhouse district and counted as the classic address for hearty northern German cooking at any hour of the day or night. Founded to feed the workers from the nearby wholesale market and the meat trade around the clock, the place has kept its character intact: a plain corner house where taxi drivers stop in at night, bakers come by at dawn and regulars from the neighbourhood sit at the same Formica tables during the day. The location at the Sternschanzenpark, on the corner of Sternstraße and Lippmannstraße, is strategically placed between Sternschanze, St. Pauli and the Karolinenviertel. The menu lists the classics the house is known for: breaded pork schnitzel or Wiener-style, Frikadellen, Eisbein, beef rouladen, Königsberger Klopse, with fried potatoes, sauerkraut and potato salad on the side. Portions are generous and the sauce is not an afterthought. Astra and Jever are on tap to go with them. The setting is deliberately unreconstructed: wood panelling, a dark bar, slaughterhouse memorabilia on the walls, an atmosphere somewhere between corner pub and dining room. It is open practically without interruption from Sunday evening to Saturday lunchtime, which makes Erika's Eck one of the rare 24-hour options in Hamburg. Reservations are not customary and rarely needed; a table almost always turns up. Mains are priced between 9 and 16 euros, by now the exception in a gentrified Schanzenviertel. Getting there: S-Bahn Sternschanze (S11, S21, S31) or U-Bahn Feldstraße (U3), about five minutes on foot from either. Ideal for late-night hunger after a Reeperbahn outing, early shift changes and anyone looking for honest Hamburg cooking without the staging.
