St. Michaelis (Michel)

Hamburg's main church with a viewing tower – a sailors' landmark since the 17th century.

The Michel is Hamburg's principal church and sailors' landmark, a point of orientation from the harbour for centuries – not without irony, since it has been destroyed three times and rebuilt three times: burnt down by lightning in 1750, destroyed by a fire during restoration in 1906, and severely damaged by bombs in 1944. The present baroque brick building essentially dates from 1762 (architects Sonnin and Prey); the dome was put back in its original form in 1912. Practical detail: the lift up the 132-metre tower (8 euros adults, 4 euros children, as of 2026) opens a 360-degree view that ranks among Hamburg's finest – from the HafenCity across the harbour to the Alster. On clear days you can see as far as Lüneburg. Inside, the crypt plays the second leading role: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is buried here, among others, and there is a small exhibition on Hamburg's church history. On Wednesdays and Sundays at 12 noon, a trumpet chorale sounds from the tower – an unbroken tradition since 1700 and one of Hamburg's true constants. Getting there: U3 St. Pauli or Rödingsmarkt, then an 8-minute walk via the Englische Planke. Combines perfectly with the Krameramtsstuben directly below, one of Hamburg's few surviving half-timbered courtyards.
