Miniatur Wunderland
The largest model railway in the world – 16,000 meters of track, 1,120 trains, Hamburg airport included.
Miniatur Wunderland, in Block D of the Speicherstadt, has been Germany's number-one attraction since 2001 – most visited, highest rated, longest line. Twin brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun pulled off what no one thought possible: a model railway so large and so lovingly detailed that visitors with no model-train past at all are hooked within 30 seconds. The layout now covers nearly 1,700 square meters, with 16,000 meters of track, 1,120 trains, 500,000 LEDs and more than 300,000 figures. Major sections include Central Germany, Hamburg/Northern Germany, the USA (a Las Vegas that brings you to your knees), Scandinavia (with real water), Switzerland with alpine peaks rising overhead, Italy, Provence – and, since 2024, Patagonia. For many, though, the highlight is still Hamburg's Knuffingen Airport: fully functional, with aircraft taking off and landing every 30 seconds. Planning: count on three to five hours, and book a timed slot online in advance (treat it like a clinic appointment, not a suggestion) – walk-ins only work outside school vacations. Getting there: U3 Baumwall, then a 5-minute walk over the Brooksbrücke. Right next door: the Hamburg Dungeon, the Maritime Museum and Spicy's – the densest cluster of attractions in the city for a full day on the harbor.
