Hamburg has celebrated its port's birthday (7 May 1189) every year since 1977, turning the riverfront into a three-day, open-air spectacle. The arrival parade, the famous tug ballet, the dragon-boat cup and a programme spread across some 30 stages stretching from the Landungsbrücken all the way to HafenCity make it the largest port festival in the world, drawing around 1.5 million visitors each May.
