Köhlbrandbrücke

The Köhlbrandbrücke (Köhlbrand Bridge) is one of the great visible symbols of Hamburg's working port: an elegant cable-stayed span that has arced across the Köhlbrand, a side arm of the Elbe, since 1974, linking the western port areas to the Autobahn. Its tall pylons and fanned-out cables make it one of the best-known engineering structures in northern Germany, recognizable from viewpoints all over the city. For travelers it is mainly a photo subject and a lesson in scale. Container ships slide underneath on their way to the terminals, and behind it stretches the forest of cranes that makes this Germany's largest seaport. The best views are from the water, either on a harbor cruise or from the HADAG ferries that run as part of the public transit network, and from vantage points along the edge of the port. One thing to know before planning around it: the Köhlbrandbrücke is a highway bridge with no sidewalk and no bike lane, so crossing it on foot is not possible in normal operation. Treat it as something you look at rather than something you walk, and build it into a full-length harbor cruise, which is where it lands with the most impact anyway.
