L'Osteria Hamburg-Hauptbahnhof

Pizzas the size of the dining table — the family pizzeria chain at the Hauptbahnhof.

L'Osteria is a pizzeria chain founded in Nuremberg in 1999 and modelled on Italian neighbourhood trattorias: open kitchen, dark wood, marble tables and a concept built on two classics — 45-centimetre pizzas and house-made pasta. The Hamburg branch at the Hauptbahnhof is one of the group's highest-grossing locations and works on the same in-house production principle as the original Osteria in Munich. The location in St. Georg is about as central as it gets: right on the Steintorplatz, between the Hauptbahnhof and the Lange Reihe, the restaurant acts as an easy meeting point for travellers, theatre-goers and office lunch breaks. The menu focuses on around 15 pizza varieties — the Pizza Tonno e Cipolla and the Diavola are among the bestsellers, alongside pasta classics like spaghetti vongole, tagliatelle al ragù and ravioli ai funghi. Antipasti are served on large wooden boards, the tiramisu is house-made. House wine by the glass from around 5.90 euros. The interior is semi-industrial: brick walls, Edison bulbs, an open kitchen with a stone oven. The atmosphere stays lively rather than loud even at full capacity — a deliberately family-friendly register. Reservations are strongly recommended in the evening and at weekends, online via the L'Osteria website. At lunchtime and in the late afternoon walk-in usually works without trouble. Price level €€: pizzas between 11 and 16 euros, pasta 13 to 18 euros, an antipasti board for two around 19 euros. Getting there: 3 minutes on foot from the Hauptbahnhof (S1/S2/S3/S21, U1/U3), exit Kirchenallee. Also walkable from the ZOB coach station. Ideal for: families with children, an ICE-connection dinner before moving on and groups looking for a reliable Italian without a reservation.
