Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht on Adolphsplatz is one of the few Hamburg brewpubs that still brews its beer on site in its own brewhouse. The concept follows the southern German Brauhaus tradition, established in Hamburg since the late 1980s: unfiltered, unpasteurised beer straight from the storage tank, paired with a hearty German menu. The brand traces back to a brewing family from the Tyrol; the Hamburg location is one of the oldest in this small chain. The setting could hardly be more central: Adolphsplatz, right between the Rathaus, the Alster and the stock exchange, at the transition from the Kontorhausviertel into the Neustadt. That makes the Brauhaus a classic stop for city-centre professionals and for visitors after a stroll around the Binnenalster. The menu features Pilsner and Hell from the in-house brewery, plus seasonal brews such as Maerzen or Bock. From the kitchen: pork knuckle, tarte flambee, Brauhaus skillet, sausage platters, schnitzel and Matjes herring Hamburg-style. In summer, asparagus dishes are added. Portions are generous and clearly built to accompany beer. The interior is a typical brewhouse setting: copper kettles behind glass, long wooden tables, hints of vaulting and subdued lighting. In summer the terrace opens onto Adolphsplatz, with a view of the Patriotische Gesellschaft building. Reservations are recommended for groups and Friday or Saturday evenings; weekday lunches are usually fine as a walk-in. Mains run between 16 and 26 euros, with beer around 4.50 euros for 0.3 litres - solid mid-range pricing (EE) for a central location. Getting there: U3 Rathaus or Roedingsmarkt, about three minutes on foot; S-Bahn Stadthausbruecke around six minutes. Ideal for: after-work rounds, company dinners and visitors looking for hearty German cooking with house-brewed beer in a central spot.
