Internationales Maritimes Museum
3,000 years of maritime history housed in the Kaispeicher B warehouse of 1879.
The Internationales Maritimes Museum Hamburg is one of the most extensive maritime museums in the world - housed in the massive Kaispeicher B of 1879, the oldest surviving warehouse in the city. Spread across nine thematically organized decks (floors) is Peter Tamm's collection: 50,000 ship models, 5,000 paintings, 2,000 films, 1.5 million photographs, plus uniforms, ships' bells and naval flags. The range stretches from Viking long-ship timbers through the clipper era and the age of steam to the Queen Mary 2, Second World War shipping, modern container ships and naval fleets. Highlights: the model gallery on deck 4 (with the famous 'Wasa' model and a 5.80-meter-long model of the Queen Mary 2), the submarine model and the whisky-still model. On the ground floor are the 'Catch of the Day' café and a bookshop. Practical details: 15 € adults, 11 € concessions, 7 € children. Allow at least 3 hours for genuine enthusiasts, 90 minutes for a quick overview - the building is enormous. Getting there: U1 Meßberg or Überseequartier (U4), then a 10-minute walk across the Magdeburger Brücke. The roof offers a direct view of HafenCity and the Elbphilharmonie.
