Vapiano Jungfernstieg
Pasta-and-pizza chain right on Jungfernstieg - fast, transparent, with Alster views.
Vapiano on Jungfernstieg is the city-centre Hamburg branch of the casual Italian chain founded in Hamburg itself in 2002 - a slice of Hanseatic restaurant history, even if the concept has long gone international. The principle hasn't changed: an open cucina with pasta and pizza prepared fresh at live stations in front of guests, paid for via chip card on the way out. Founder Mark Korzilius and chef Gianluca Iannone originally designed the format for young city dwellers who want to eat quickly and without the formality of table service. The location is prime city centre: right on Jungfernstieg with a view of the Binnenalster, within walking distance of the Rathaus, Moenckebergstrasse and the Europa Passage. The menu lists around twelve pasta classics (Carbonara, Arrabbiata, Pesto Genovese, Gamberetti e Spinaci), stone-oven pizzas, antipasti and salads. Pasta type and spice level are chosen to order, and vegetarian and vegan options are clearly marked throughout. The setting is bright, with wood and stone tables, high ceilings and plenty of daylight through the large windows facing the Alster. In summer there are outdoor seats with a water view - one of the best lunch terraces in the city centre. Evenings get considerably louder and busier; lunchtimes draw a business crowd. Reservations aren't accepted - everything runs as walk-in. Expect a wait at lunchtime (noon to 2pm) and at weekends. Pasta mains run 9 to 13 euros, pizzas 10 to 14 euros, with a glass of house wine around 5 euros - making it one of the few affordable options on Jungfernstieg. Getting there: U/S Jungfernstieg (U1, U2, U4, S1, S2, S3), Ballindamm exit, 30 seconds on foot. Ideal for: a quick lunch between shopping trips, an Alster break with pasta, families with children, and anyone after a city-centre location without city-centre prices.
