East Restaurant
Inside the East Hotel - Asian sushi fusion in a dramatic former foundry hall.
The East Restaurant is part of the East Hotel Hamburg, which opened in 2004 in a former iron foundry belonging to the Maschinenfabrik Menck. The concept combines European-Asian fusion cooking with classic sushi tradition, with the long sushi counter serving as a stage. The kitchen is run in the style of a pan-Asian brigade, with a Robata grill and a dedicated sushi section where fresh fish is prepared daily. The address on Simon-von-Utrecht-Strasse 31 places the restaurant on the quieter edge of St. Pauli, five minutes on foot from the Reeperbahn but away from the bustle. The menu offers sushi and sashimi variations, black cod with miso, wagyu from the Robata grill, dim sum, plus tatakis and tartares. Vegetarian courses with tempura vegetables or maki variations round out the offering. The wine list leans European, alongside a curated sake selection. Architecturally, the restaurant is the star: the twelve-metre-high foundry hall with its cast-iron columns, brick walls and exposed iron-girder frame was transformed by architect Jordan Mozer into a cavern of warm wood and rounded surfaces reminiscent of sandstone sculptures. Indirect lighting and subdued acoustics, despite the hall's scale, define the atmosphere. Reservations are recommended in particular for weekends and for seats at the sushi counter, online via the hotel website or by phone. Mains run between 28 and 48 euros, sushi set menus from 65 euros, and the large tasting menu at 95 euros - the EEE tier reflects the product quality and the staging of the space. Getting there: U3 St. Pauli, two minutes on foot, or S1/S3 Reeperbahn, seven minutes. Ideal for: occasions with architectural wow factor, sushi lovers, and a relaxed opener before a night on the Reeperbahn.
