Altes Mädchen

Ratsherrn brewpub in the Schanzenhoefe - 60 beers, exposed brick and bratwurst.

Altes Maedchen is the brewpub restaurant of the Ratsherrn Brauerei and has been a fixture of the Schanzenhoefe since 2012 - that listed courtyard ensemble from a former late-19th-century slaughterhouse complex, which today brings together a brewery, market hall and creative offices. The concept combines craft-brewed beer with an honest, regionally minded kitchen - conceived by Hamburg restaurateur Axel Ohm, who revived the Ratsherrn brand after 2010. The location in the Sternschanze sets the tone: between Schulterblatt and Neuer Pferdemarkt, in the heart of the Schanze, but off the street bustle and set back in the quiet inner courtyard. On offer are 60 beers - from the house Pils and Pale Ale to rotating craft-beer guest kegs - and a selection of brewpub classics: handmade bratwursts from the charcoal grill, braised dishes, fresh stone-oven bread and daily specials with a focus on north German ingredients. The bratwurst selection is considered one of the best in the city. The setting: raw brick, high ceilings with steel girders, long wooden tables, an open counter and a glass view straight into the brewery. In summer the courtyard opens as a beer garden with long benches under string lights. Reservations are advisable in the evenings and at weekends - walk-ins work early in the evening or at the bar, where you can also eat without a table. Price tier EE: mains between 16 and 26 euros, a 0.4 litre house beer from around 4.50 euros. Getting there: 3 minutes on foot from the S- and U-Bahn station Sternschanze (S11/S21/S31, U3). Ideal for: a relaxed Hamburg evening with friends that brings beer, craft and Schanze atmosphere together at one table.
