The Eisenstein has been one of the defining addresses of Ottensen's dining scene since 1990 and has helped write the district's shift from working-class quarter to creative neighborhood. Named after the Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein, the restaurant has long been a gathering point for film people, publishers and journalists - the neighboring Zeise-Kinos sit right next door. Location: in the Zeise-Hallen on Friedensallee, the heart of Ottensen between Bahrenfelder Straße and Altona station. The 19th-century former ship's-propeller factory today houses cinemas, ad agencies and the restaurant. The menu: hand-stretched wood-fired pizza - crisp edge, classic toppings such as Margherita, Salsiccia or Tartufo. Alongside, a Mediterranean-Italian card with house-made pasta, antipasti plates, a fish of the day and a lunch menu that changes daily. The wine list focuses on Italian growers, with a fair by-the-glass selection. The setting: tall brick walls, exposed steel beams, an open kitchen with a visible domed oven. Industrial architecture meets white tablecloths and warm lighting - loud, lively, never stiff. In summer the terrace opens onto the Zeise-Hallen courtyard. Reservations: strongly recommended in the evening and at weekends, especially around screenings at the Zeise-Kinos. Prices: upper middle bracket. Pizzas 14 to 19 euros, pasta 18 to 24 euros, mains 26 to 34 euros. A three-course menu with wine comes in at around 65 euros. Getting there: S-Bahn Altona (S1, S2, S3, S5), then 8 minutes on foot along Ottenser Hauptstraße. Buses 1 and 2 stop at Altona station. Ideal for: evenings before or after an arthouse screening, long table rounds with friends, and anyone after unpretentious Italian cooking inside a striking piece of Hamburg industrial architecture.
