Coast by east
Large designer venue with a harbour view — pasta, pizza and a sushi bar at Magdeburger Brücke.
Coast by east belongs to Hamburg's east group around Anh Joachim Luu, whose east Hotel in St. Pauli has written a chapter of Hamburg restaurant history. This offshoot opened in HafenCity in 2007, when the quarter south of the Speicherstadt was still taking shape — and quickly became one of the new district's gastronomic flagships. The concept: Mediterranean cooking with an Asian inflection, complemented by a sushi bar. The location on Magdeburger Brücke is a stroke of luck. From the large dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows and from the terrace you look across the Magdeburger harbour basin to the Elbphilharmonie and the passing harbour cruise boats. Address: Großer Grasbrook 14, right on the water, above the HafenCity Riverbus piers. The menu features hand-made pasta (tagliatelle with truffle, spaghetti vongole), pizza from the stone oven, Mediterranean mains from the grill — sea bass, rack of lamb, wagyu entrecôte — and a wide selection of sushi and sashimi from the open bar. Mains run between €28 and €48, sushi platters from €35; a three-course evening realistically lands at €70–95 per person without drinks. That positions Coast firmly in the upper bracket, though not at Michelin level. Architecturally, dark wood, brick and warm pools of light over long tables dominate — the design by Hamburg practice Robertneun Architekten is built for volume, almost 300 seats plus a lounge and bar. Reservations are strongly recommended from Thursday to Saturday and on sunny days with the terrace open, often two weeks in advance. Getting there: U4 Überseequartier, five minutes on foot. Ideal for business dinners with a harbour view, longer evenings as a foursome and occasions where the water belongs at the table.
